Magento Security Enhancements

Magento had grown a lot since its initial release back in 2008, and one of the reasons for its popularity is the advanced security that the platform provides. In Magento 2.3.4 security enhancements, the update brings 220 minor and important fixes and 30 major security upgrades.

The vulnerabilities of custom layout updates and the depreciation of layout updates are removed. This Magento security change is going to remove opportunities for Remote Code Execution (RCE). Magento 2.3.4 upgrade in security also includes site-crossing scripting potential exposures removal (XSS), to protect stores and customer engaging shopping online using Magento privacy.

The content template features of Magento in Magento 2.3.4 is also redesigned, now only whitelisted variables can be added to the list. This mitigates the possibility of the administrator-defines templates such as emails, newsletters, and CMS content that can contain variables that can directly call PHP functions on objects.

Magento Platform Upgrade

In terms of platform upgrades, Magento 2.3.4 update is worth noticing with their improvements to the website security and Payment Card Industry (PCI) compliance.

  • The Magento message queue framework optimized to support the latest release of RabbitMQ V3.8
  • The page caching and session storage was improved and tested on the latest stable release Redis v5.0.6
  • Prior to Magento 2.3.4, if using a declarative schema with MariaDB 10.2, Magento issues will occur with an error that indicates the schema was not up-to-date. The Magento 2.3.4 upgrade now supports declarative schema with both MySQL and MariaDB 10.2.

Magento Performance Boost

Magento 2.3.4 features have included new advances that result in a remarkable performance boost:

The banner cache logic was reconstructed, so that redundant non-cache servers were no more, which contribute to the increase in Magento performance.

Refactoring PHTML files now built with bundling mechanism to better assist parsing. The newly improved bundling mechanism can now identify all dependencies on Javascript.

Magento performance enhancements also include adding the disable report collection by default of Magento. A configuration (System Configuration > General > Reports > General Options)  now allows business users to completely or partially disable reports.

The Magento Inventory Management system on Magento 2.3.4 also has a few improvements. The first enhancement in Magento inventory resolved the issues on the database server being higher load than expected that involve shopping cart.

Second, the Inventory Reservation CLI command is updated, which helps in reducing the memory usage to find and compensate for missing reservations.

The last item on Magento Inventory Management improvements is the solving of many quality Magento issues, such as credit memos, grouped products, source, and stock mass actions.

For more information on Magento Inventory bugs fixed, see the Inventory Management Release Notes.

Fixed Issues

Magento 2.3.4 features also contain hundreds of fixes for Magento issues that exist in the core code. The fixes covered functions in backends such as cache, bundle products, cart and checkout, catalog, catalog inventory, CMS content, customer, and customer-related fixes.

To see all fixed Magento issues and additional information about the issues, check Fixed Issues on Magento 2.3.4 Release Notes.

Known Issues

Some issues exist in this release or will be fixed in the upcoming 2.3.5 that will be released next quarter will be listed below:

The release introduces an enhancement to the validation logic for customer data sections that aren’t compatible with pre-2.3.4 deployment. You cannot invalidate custom customer sections in etc/frontend/sections.xml by declaring an action node without specifying any related sections.

If customers order a Paypal Express Checkout, and the region shipping address was input in the text field rather than choose from the drop-down menu, then Magento 2.3.4 will indicate there is an error that occurred. One way to work around this issue is to use region patch for Magento 2.3.4 (Git-based or Composer-based). The fix for these issues is anticipated to come out in Magento version 2.3.5, scheduled to release by the end of April 2020.
